ASIA K WILLIAMS
Born and raised on the East Side of Detroit in the 48205—an area known as the Red Zone. From a young age, she saw the stark contrast between the vibrant architecture downtown and the neglected infrastructure in her own neighborhood. That difference sparked a vision: to bring beauty and intentional design back to places like the one she called home. Asia discovered her love for architecture while attending Cass Technical High School, where her creative mind found its purpose. She went on to study architecture at the University of Detroit Mercy, where her passion deepened and her purpose became clear.
Throughout her academic journey—including earning both her Bachelor and Master of Architecture and has recently achieved a Master of Community Development—Asia has remained rooted in culture and community. She realized early on that architecture wasn’t just about design; it was about identity. She didn’t want to check her culture at the door just to succeed in a profession where few people looked like her. Instead, she centered it. Her thesis focused on community-led design in Detroit, especially incorporating youth voice and cultural identity into the built environment. From studying abroad in Warsaw to receiving awards like the AIA Michigan President’s Scholarship and the Grace Lee Boggs Social Justice Architecture Award, Asia continues to lead with heart, heritage, and hustle—committed to designing spaces that honor where people come from and empower where they’re going.
